From silkworm to fabric: all the stages of manufacturing silk are here. The visit includes a silkworm farm and ingenious machinery, and there are guided tours in season.
The museum presents all the stages of silkworm farming in the Cévennes. The first room is a reconstitution of a magnanerie (silkworm farm) where, from April to October, you can see living silkworms at the various stages of their life cycle.
Two other rooms are dedicated to the transformation of silk: by spinning, meaning the creation of silk thread from cocoons, and then by weaving or knitting on manual or mechanical looms. All of the objects on display were really used, either by “silk reelers” at home or by workers in large workshops.
There is also a space for children, with an adapted video, games (quiz, collage, colouring-in, etc.), small looms, and silkworms that can be studied from close up and even touched.
The museum’s temporary exhibits are largely contemporary creations.
