The old mining town of Bessèges brings colour to its working-class past. Its walls inherited from the days of mining and industry are now a promising canvas for street artists with very diverse styles.

    An artist from Montpellier, Nubian uses walls like canvases. His dream-like style touches on the history of Bessèges, which used to supply the merchant navy in Marseille and the dockyard in Toulon with coal.

    An artist from the Gard and a neighbour of the MI.A.O.U., Kashink pays homage to the singer Dalida, whom her mother had seen onstage in Bessèges when she was young. Soleil Soleil is a song from the 1980s. The artist’s very characteristic style can be seen here: two pairs of eyes and a thin moustache ornament her characters, which are always very colourful.

    The Kinkajou is an emblematic animal of the Mayan jungle in Mexico, where the artist Margay lives. Unable to digest the stones of fruit that it ingests, it disseminates them as it moves around, unintentionally planting trees where barn owls nest . It thus contributes to reforestation.

    Nhobi, a Brazilian artist living in Marseille, is particularly preoccupied by the forest and the spirits that populate it. He creates frescoes in which fauna and vegetation are omnipresent. This fresco refers to the devastation of the forest and especially the burning of the Amazon rainforest.

    Street and video artist Le Long pays homage to the majesty of animals – animals whose imminent extinction he deplores. He wants to make culture accessible to everyone, “make beautiful things” and, whenever possible, “put a smile on the faces of passers-by".
